In many modest homes, the only means of heating was the fireplace and animal warmth. But it was possible to transport this heat from the hearth to heat certain areas of the house closer to the occupants by carrying embers (brazier, basin, foot and hand warmer, monk) or by transferring the heat to a solid (brick) or a liquid (hot water bottle). The means of heating diversified with the arrival of cast iron (small stove or salamander here) in the 19th century and electricity in the 20th century.
