The young André Voulgre had collected fossils in the fields or at the foot of the limestone cliffs of the Isle, which he decorated with them on the outskirts of the Carthusian monastery. He gathered mainly ammonites, bivalves, pholadomya and hyppurites which are very common in the Callovian limestone of the Périgord. Fragments of concretions from local cavities completed the collection.
Palaeontology is the science that studies living beings and organisms that have existed during geological time. These studies are based on the observation of animal and plant fossils or the traces they may have left. This science is closely related to geology, just like anthropology and prehistory.
